Sterling Silver Repousse Souvenir of Lourdes
This plaque dedicated to Notre Dame de Lourdes is sterling silver over copper, made in the repousse style of low relief, probably early 20th century. It is a beautiful and finely-worked piece, signed in the lower right corner "Ruffoni." It shows the Virgin Mary as she appeared to Bernadette in a grotto in the southwest of France, with the spire of the basilica of Notre Dame of Lourdes in the background; the dove of the Holy Spirit descends from above the scene, and various flowers and branches frame the piece. Truly a sweet little work of religious art. Condition is excellent, with some copper beginning to show through in a few places and no damage, tears or dings to the silver. 4 1/4" high by 3 1/4" wide.
